Sheet metal fabrication is the art of forming metal into flat and thin pieces that can be cut and bent into various shapes.
Many heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) companies use custom sheet metal fabricators to create ductwork with custom specifications. Creating everything from air ducts to plenums to brackets for HVAC systems is definitely a customized necessity since each HVAC system is different in measurements and needs. We custom fabricate sheet metal at our shop in Franklin, MA.

Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics
Custom-fabricated sheet metal typically comes in rectangular sheets or, if they’re thin and long, rolls. Sheet metal also comes in varying degrees of thickness.
HVAC systems dictate specific industry standards of thickness for various parts of the ductwork, but the majority of dictates fall into the 6 mm range.
Sheet metal forming is a grouping of several processes, working together in a complementary manner to form the needed parts. One or more of these processes mechanically applies deformation forces changing the shape of the metal. Custom fabricators create ordered HVAC pieces by cutting and forming the flat sheet metal into various shapes, then finishing each piece.
Here are the metals commonly used in sheet metal fabrication:
- Aluminum
- Carbon Steel
- Stainless Steel
- Copper
- Titanium
While carbon steel is one of the most widely used metals in sheet fabrication, our team can help you determine the best metal to complete your design requirements. Schedule your appointment today to go over your project.

Sheet Metal Processes
A custom order can begin with an engineering drawing, a hand drawing, or even a phone call with the needed measurements. All specifications, particularly the measurements, are clarified before the project goes to the cutting, forming, and assembling stages:
- Cutting is the act of cutting sheet metal into smaller shapes that are used later in the fabrication process.
- The drawing process relies on a mold or dies to form the sheet metal into the desired shape.
- Folding bends the sheet metal to certain angles.
- Punching creates holes in the sheet metal.
- Shearing cuts sheet metal into a long straight line.
- Stamping is similar to punching but does not completely cut through the metal.
- Roll forming turns sheet metal into a rounded shape.
- Assembling is joining the cut and formed pieces.

Air Conditioner Repair in Medfield, MA 02052
November 5, 2025
“JBD is wonderful to work with. Always professional and responsive. We had a late day emergency and Jim was done for the day on his way home, but he detoured over to our house and made a potentially big problem really small. This was late on a Friday. JBD cares about their customers and provide quality, reliable, outstanding service at a fair price. What more can you ask for?”

Air Conditioner Installation in Wrentham, MA 02093
August 20, 2025
“We recently had a new heating system installed and chose to add central A/C. We chose JBD after Jim had come to our home to look at the job. He was very thorough, explained things very well in a way we could understand, and answered our questions. He was polite and friendly and made us feel very comfortable about our decision to add A/C-a considerable expense. We chose JDB after soliciting several estimates from other companies. JBD's pricing was very reasonable and, having read the reviews for the brand he proposed and we chose, I knew we were making a good decision. The work was scheduled to take place over 2 days, 7/1 and 7/2. We were informed and confirmed by by the office so we knew the project date was right on target. Jim and his assistant, Dominic, arrived early and worked very hard for 2, long days! They were meticulous in preparing and protecting the floors and carpeted staircase with quilted fabric dropcloths--the kind typically used by moving companies to protect furniture. This was important to us as the basement floor is new and in pristine condition. They were meticulous at cleaning up when the job was completed. Upon completion, Jim explained and showed us the various parts of the new system, and also showed us how to operate the new thermostat (the one he had recommended we replace our previous one with and we're glad we took his advice). We can't say enough about Jim, Shawna (office manager), and Dominic! All of them were wonderful to deal with; friendly, helpful, understanding, patient, professional and meticulous! We would hire them again and highly recommend them to anyone in need of their services. We are thoroughly enjoying the comfort of central air! Gold stars for all of you! Thank you JBD!”

Heat Pump Installation in Franklin, MA 02038
July 15, 2025
“I recently had the pleasure of working with JBD Air Conditioning & Heating Services, Inc to install two heat pump systems in my home. From start to finish, the entire experience was a demonstration of honesty, integrity, and outstanding attention to detail. Jim took the time to thoroughly explain the options available and gave me a clear and honest breakdown of costs. I never felt pressured into making decisions, and they ensured I understood every step of the process. Shawna helped guide me through the mass save heat loan and took care of all the rebates! It’s rare to find a company that truly values trust as much as they do, and it made all the difference. Their attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the installation. Jim and Dominic were on site for three days straight and were meticulous in their work. They even adjusted the ducts, registers, and return for the master bedroom which previously had air flow issues. Jim went out of his way to shift the install date to prevent the house from losing A/C on the recent 100F day. The heat pumps are running beautifully and we're already seeing a substantial improvement in the master. If you're looking for a company that genuinely cares about delivering high-quality work while maintaining the highest standards of honesty and professionalism, look no further than JBD. They’ve earned my trust, and I’ll be recommending them to everyone I know.”
